Dr. Akbar eloquently dissects the root of immaturity within the black community. This immaturity takes various forms, whether it’s the hope of being lifted by Jesus in the rapture to a privileged place in the realm of the Lord, the longing for a transformative upheaval where oppressors self-destruct, or the personal anticipation of someone, something, or some external force rescuing us from our own shortcomings. However, a revelation dawns, perhaps during our most isolated and vulnerable moments – the realization that no savior is forthcoming. In this stark moment, the truth becomes clear: self-rescue is the only path forward. This can only be accomplished through Resilience in the Black Community.
On certain days, I find myself contemplating whether God’s presence is primarily meant for those who are destitute – for those lacking power and privilege. It’s as if God serves as a numbing agent for the harsh realities of existence. Instead of being a benevolent creator concerned with our ultimate well-being, God appears to function as a survival mechanism, ensuring our continuation rather than our flourishing. Yet, as we’re all aware, facing the rigors of existence head-on is an arduous undertaking, as it demands unwavering self-confrontation. For a significant stretch of time, black individuals in this nation had few outlets for their tears beyond the church or mosque. These sacred spaces were the sole venues where we could release, purify, and introspect. Our pain found expression solely through our music, our sorrow could be shed within the church’s embrace, and our anger was sanctioned on the streets or sports fields. Outside these realms, we were compelled to conform to a sickening status quo.

Amidst it all, we’re tasked with becoming a holistic people – individuals capable of shedding tears, embracing authenticity, demonstrating resilience, and persisting in the face of adversity, qualities reminiscent of Brer Rabbit’s craftiness. Yet, there are moments when I question our collective strength. I observe my contemporaries either worshipping wealth with the conviction that money will deliver us or sinking onto their knees, passively praying for divine deliverance. Wealth accumulates, yet discontent prevails. Jesus remains absent, while desolation feasts upon the soul, akin to a lion consuming an antelope’s innards. Consequently, we grapple for liberation – both the freedom to act and the freedom from oppressive forces. However, the most formidable struggle is recognizing the arrival of liberation.
A whole generation stands unable to fully engage in life due to excessive observation of the world’s tumultuous affairs. Nevertheless, we’re compelled to access a universal consciousness. Despite the overwhelming despondency, fatigue, neglect, and disrespect, we’re obligated to put our lives at stake. We must focus entirely on our escape and tirelessly strive to materialize our loftiest aspirations. There’s no alternate route, no other choice – solely the pursuit of our maturation.
